About The Place

Shri  Sammed Shikhar ji is located at Girdhi district of Jharkhand (Bihar). It is the highest peak of Jharkhand. It is the holy place of the Jain community where the twentieth of the twenty four jain tirthankaras (supreme preachers of dharma)  attained moksha along with many monks. This place is also known as parasnath hills followed by many tonks. It has 12000 steps and it covers about  27 km area which is to be completed in a day and old people and a person who is not able to walk he/ she can use the doli or bike services to reach to the last point of the hill.

Significance Of Shri Sammed Shikhar Ji

The site is also called Shri Sammed Åšikhar “peak of concentration” because it is a place where twenty of twenty-four Tirthankaras attained Moksha through meditation. The word “Parasnath” is derived from Lord Parshvanatha, the twenty-third Jain Tirthankara, who was one of those who attained Moksha at the site in 772 BCE.

Pilgrimage Duration

It is recommended to plan for a 3-5 day pilrimage to Shikharji. Even though the Yatra to the Hills is for 1 day, however there are many Religious attractions in Madhuban to be seen. 1-2 days for planning, Madhuban attractions, rest, massage etc.; 1 day for Yatra; 1 day for post-Yatra rest, Madhuban attractions.

Location

Shikhar ji is located an inland part of rural east india. It lies on NH-2, the Delhi- Kolkata highway in a section called the Grand Trunkroad Shikharji rises to 4,480 feet (1,370m) making it the highest mountain in Jharkhand state.  

Tonks

 There are 31 tonks each enshrines footprints, in black and white marble, of each Tirththankara, since these temples does not have images these tonks  are  worshipped by both Digambar and Shvetambar.

Shri Sammed shikhar ji is considered as the most important holy place of both the digambara and svetambara sects of Jainism and the jurisdiction of the main temples is shared by both sects.

Yatra Time And Duration

Yatra has to be completed in a day because there is no facility to stay overnight. It takes about 12 hours to for a healthy person to cover 27 km, however it can take up to 16 hours for elderly, Yatris with kids etc. Start 3- 4 am, reach 1st tonk around 9:00 am, see all tonks about 1:00 pm and start return journey. Reach Madhuban  by 5:00 pm. Later return times are also possible if covering all the talks.
